Sparklehorse – Ghost in the Sky, Knives of Summertime, Don’t Take My Sunshine Away

Mark Linkous returns, triumphantly, his battered old car pulling up the gravel drive, past the tumbleweeds, ghost towns and wire fences, rolling slowly to a stop in front of the collective subconcius of several thousand hungry music fans. Has it really been over 10 years since (big breath) vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot? It has indeed.

Last time I saw Mark he had been out of hospital but was still in his wheelchair, it was the Reading festival (1996?) and I was an indie kid in heaven. The songs sounded so fragile, little wafer thin porceline musical babies that I held carefully and close. Later songs like Happy Man/Pig revealed a musical frustration that punctuauted the beautiful hazey americana.

If you haven’t heard Sparklehorse then think Flaming Lips/Grandaddy crosed with Low through in a bit of Eels and Gram Parsons for good measure. Each single shows the different textures of the band’s new LP (out very soon) and every track and b-side is wonderful. You can buy on CD as well but you only get the three main tracks. better to get the 7″’s and then try and get the set-binding thing from the website. (link now dead)

I would recomend this to anyone who has shown a passing interest in interesting music (whatever that is), who sometimes likes sitting down and really listening to music as opposed to using it as something in the background. I like.

I was at that gig too.

I went to see them some years later, and yer man was out of his chair. This is a picture my girlfriend at the time drew :

It was a great gig and a great festival – Urusei Yatsura & Ash & China Drum were some of my favourites.
Sorry – can’t seem to get the pictures to work.

They are playing at hammersmith working mens club soon and then off round the UK – should be great gigs!

lemonsquash
Hmmm. Wot happens if you follow this link ?

I saw all of them! China Drum were particularly good, with the singing drummer. I saw them years later. They’d changed their name to The Drum, the previous drummer now just sang, and they had a new drummer with an electric drumkit. I cannot tell you how much of a let-down this was.

Christ on a bike! It’s not my day. Feel free to delete all those comments.

Comencing deletion of stuff not working…

China Drum went downhill after releasing the cracking album with the geese on the cover – was it called Goosefair? Probly… Anyway, best moshpit of the weekend they were – I think I managed 3 or 4 crowd surfs – when is the proper age to stop crowdsurfing anyway? last time for me was babyshambles last year…

lemonsquash
The second album had a couple of good tracks on it. But yes, the first one did rule.
I’m not sure there is a proper age to stop crowdsurfing. I did, however, exceed the proper recommended weight some years back.

Transport for London… (from 20th Sep 06)

TFL keep emailing me every week to let me know about all the work thats going on (i.e. which lines/stations are kaput). Fair enough, good service, thanks for the info. What annoys me is that every email says;

Transport for London’s investment programme to improve and modernise the Tube network is gathering pace. As a result, the amount of work taking place at the weekend is increasing.

Every week I am told that things are gathering pace. How much more pace is there to gather? Instead of opting to gather more pace each week, every week, would it not be better to work at the desired pace in the first place and stick to it? This ever increasing work speed must be playing havoc with the engineers organs…

bah.

Ah, TFL are very good at telling you that things are moving, when in fact I hear they plan to rename the District Line as “The Snail Line”

Ah, the monthly money cycle continues. Two weeks before pay day and I’m down to £21 plus a few coins in me wallet. But I do have a good reason; my mate Quick’s stag do at the weekend, in Cardiff. I went to Bristol on Friday to stay round my sister’s tiny flat. Getting there was a bit of a headache, the underground was grinding to a halt cus of signal failure, the buses were slow as ever, got to Paddington only to find that my Annual Railcard 30% off thing doesn’t cover Bristol/Cardiff and so I would have to pay £60 for the journey. Fuck that. I thought about going down to Guildford and seeing if I could cadge a lift off of John Twin on Saturday and miss out on seeing me sis. Then I remembered the couch station at Victoria so I leapt back on the Circle line (which was very late and slow) and cursed myself for not thinking about it sooner cus I could have bought a mega-bus ticket for next to nowt online. Ah well, £16.50 on the more comfy National Express is ok – and they have lavees onboard. Got there at 4 and bought a ticket for the 5.30 couch so I bought a standard and a few pints in the pub opposite the station.

The 5.30 couch came and the 5.30 couch left with me not on it. They said that there were two 5.30 couches – ours was a few minutes later. 50 minutes later it turned up after the 6.00 one had already left (we weren’t allowed to board that one for boring, target-related issues. So I didn’t get to Bristol till after 9.00 pm. Bah.

My sister’s place is pretty small, especially seeing as it’s both her and her boyfriend’s place. It’s a flat built above a single car sized garage but I think that it eats into the actual house by another 4 or 5 feet. It also seems smaller because of the large amount of Nintendo related crap that they fill it with. I counted over 12 models of Link from Zelda… still it’s a nice modern flat and cheap too, for Bristol.

I left the next day, after tea, bacon sarnies and a wash, to discover that I would be late if I caught the next train to Cardiff because of a black hole in the timetable that meant that trains run every half hour except between 9.50 and 10.50 on a Saturday morning for some reason. I called up John & Paul Twin and caught them while they were on the M4 and they thankfully made a detour to come pick me up from Temple Meads – thanks J&P! We got to Paintball (near Cowbridge) just before the rest of em.

Paintball is awesome sweet. I’ve never been before and I really enjoyed it even though I was out after 20 seconds in two of the games. I used to be a pacifist but I’ve totally seen how much fun it is being in the army. OK, so if this was real life we would all have been dead after 5 minutes of combat but no-one mentions that – it’s like the computer games were you never really die – great adverts for signing up and giving your life for Queen & Country. Yes please. Anyway, Quick got covered in bruises, as is the custom for the stag and looks like he may give birth to a clan of Gremlins any minute now such is the frequency of the round bumps all over his back.

I forgot to bring smart shoes with me so I quickly picked some up from NEXT in Cardiff before tidying meself up at the Hotel before a curry at Spice Quarter – very expensive but very nice. Quick was dressed in a pink shirt and WPC pink hat cus he’s becoming a CPO soon – his brothers and made various references questioning his sexuality across the back of the shirt… After that it was on to the pub then a strip club and then to Creation, a kind of cool club that wasn’t too big, had a good selection of rooms, gave us free drinks vouchers, and was packed with beautiful Cardiff girls. Not bad. I’ve not been to a club for bloody years (except indie nights out in Camden) probly since I was 21 and went to the Opera House in Bournemouth – but it was great fun, possibly because of the large amount of booze consumed. Quick was putting them away and we had to keep an eye on him as he has a penchant for throwing drinks over people; friends or strangers alike. Best tune of the night was an awesome-o D’nB remix of Voodoo People that had me and Fox dancing land jumping like eejits.

Back to the hotel and then drinking till 5.30 am at the bar. Bed for 4 hours and awake to discover that I’d avoided any kind of hangover! Can’t say the same for the rest… Managed a couple of lunchtime pints with Delyth, who hadn’t seen in 4/5 years – had to remember her mobile number of the top of my head and hit it on the nail first go – really good to see her again and we chatted about approaching 30 (argh!) boring jobs (check) and leaving the country as soon as funds allow (i.e. never).

Fox drove back to London – good work because he got 5 hours kip and before was up for 48 hours straight while coming back from holiday – cheers matey! Back home, hot bath, and sleep sleep sleep. And then check the old bank balance to discover I am brassic again. Ho hum.

Oh – and I now have a mobile phone. Finally. Hooray!

Muse Muse Muse… Everbodies favourite live band release the second single from Black Holes & Revelations after the slightly confused, and all the better for it, Supermassive Black Hole that sounded like Britney and Kylie fighting with live electric cables and was utterley ace. This, however, sounds like Keane. Keane Keane Keane… Music fans seem to hate them with a passion for some reason (no guitars, middle class, grade 8 piano, each has a butler and a cook, they might play squash, etc) but I have to say that I actually liked a lot of the early singles. But this isn’t Keane, its Muse Godammit and it shouldn’t be an other radio filler, middle of the road song. It should have robots, lasers, explosions and a bit more oompth to it. Why didn’t we get Knight of Cydonia like what the Yanks did? Lets just go with the idea that the record label got to decide this release shall we…

Damn record companies.
I like Keane too, despite my music-snob-boyfriend sneering at me every time I play the album.

thisisalloneword
I like them but I think they wanted to reach out to the haters with a more rock sounding second album and lost some of the magic.
I think that they were meant to get an NME cover a few weeks back, and then Syd Barrett popped his clogs, the Keane article was downgraded to a single page and no cover.
Hey, they don’t need the snobs…

Minimalist eighties vibe shaking its stuff here. A happy slice of sparse post punk inspired by the cheery event of the suicide of David Kelly. Kaplow! Take that Tony Blair. Kersplat! Take that Bush controlled labour party. Haha where are your evil capitalist pig dog friends now? My army of angst ridden middle class apathetic non-voters will rise up and dismiss your policies at dinner parties all over the land. Thanks Thom. B-side The Drunkk Machine goes boinky boinky says my flatmate Phil. Both tracks are pretty good. Ignore the lyrics and imagine it’s a Simple Minds B-side from back in the day about girls and not being understood and stuff.

They dance alone… (from 12th Sep 06)

A most enjoyable weekend down in Southampton, pubs and clubs for Steve’s birthday, pizza and streetfighter. Ended up in The Dungeon, a goth/metal club which plays rock/metal/goth tracks some of which I recognise, some of which I could name. The thing that got me was watching the people dancing. They don’t dance like normal people should dance; it’s all about posing and large personal space. People jerk around throwing limbs all over so that should you want to dance with someone you have to stay about 4 foot apart. It’s very much like a dance club where everyone drinks instead of taking ecstasy and people throw shapes but don’t hug.

What’s the point of dancing if you’re doing it by yourself and only allowing others to sit back and watch? Where’s the fun in that? What am I missing here?
This complaining from a man known to do the worm, not exactly a good move for more than one person…

National Smoking Week Short Story

Anyone that knows me well will tell you that I am firmly against advertising. It’s a pet hate and I hold a strong belief that advertising is a key contributor to kidney stones and ulcers. Before advertising there were much fewer recorded operations involving the removal of kidney stones, I am unsure about ulcers but I have my suspects.
I am also deeply against smoking. It is a filthy habit that has claimed many lives; six of my eight great grandparents have passed away and were smokers, the only living two may seem in robust health but they too smoke and it can only be a matter of time. It saddens me that they may not live to see the birth of their first great great great grandchild.
Despite the above, there is a recession on, and we need to pay bills and buy new things and so on. I have reluctantly accepted a £50 commission to write a short story for possible inclusion in an anthology which aims to celebrate National Smoking Week, in particular, the simple joys (when smoked in moderation) of a certain brand of cigarette (who I will not be further condoning, or mentioning, here).

The story, slightly hackneyed, centres around two schoolchildren on the cusp of adolescence, who break into an old house and see some sort of ghost. They will discuss one in knowing tones – the other in quick agreement – that ghosts are made of a physical materialisation of a spiritual presence which, in short, is dust. Dust being what the shell of the body inevitably will become; an almost weightless form for a spirit strong enough to form such dust into a figure. This is why old house are such good places for ghosts to haunt. Modernist two bedroom spotless apartments are not so good.
Whether they actually see a ghost or not is left open for the interpretation of the reader. But it is the trigger for further philosophical ponderings, as young boys are want, on the subject of death and if the dust is still part of the dead person. They conclude that they have probably been breathing in a fair amount of dead person and so they decide that to remove this dust they will carefully burn it out by smoking (the unmentioned brand). The older and more dominant of the boys pulls a pack from his pocket and they light up, lie back and watch the autumn sun fall below the horizon of the trees. The end.

Needs padding out to fill up 2,500 words, nothing ground breaking, you get the gist.

Fridge Anxiety

No fridge I have ever known has answered one way or another this question;

Do the numbers on the temperature dial inside the fridge mean in degrees centigrade positive or negative? Is 4 warmer or cooler than 1?

Save me google!

Most posts seem to say that the higher the number = the colder the fridge… but is this always true?

Well, I’ve not been great in writing this blog for months now. Distractions can occur. When I’m at work I am sat in front of a PC for at least 5 hours a day and there’s a routine of non-work that fits snugly into the routine of actual work; I check the BBC news pages and read any new stuff about Saints or AFC Bournemouth; I delete the freecycle emails from my yahoo account – I have no stuff to give away and no room for anything else – sometimes I might skim them just in case someone is giving away a crate of priceless old punk vinyl (they never are); I check my last.fm pages and I check here too. Anyway, there’s a finite amount of time all this non-work can fit into and, against my better judgement, and after work said to me that I actually should get one of them because, well I work in IT and they are the future apparently, I signed up with Twitter. Twice.

So, if you ever want to;
www.twitter.com/thisisall1word – that’s my ‘normal’ one
www.twitter.com/joefoster_PICT – that’s my ‘work’ one

So there’s that eating into my time a bit. Not sure if I like it yet because I am thoroughly bored of people having conversations saying “You do read Stephen Fry’s twitters don’t you? You don’t! Oh, well, and this is so funny…” blah blah blah. Conversation gets sucked into what some celebrities think about something. Celebrities, even those as great as Mr Fry, can hold good opinions but I dislike the viral like spread of this culture further and further into our daily lives.

Where was I? Where was I?

Twitter joins the list and blogging sits back. Plus I’ve still been archiving the old 20six blog stuff (not done for a while) and I now have to worry about backing up all my old geocities content. Back in the day before people said inane things such as “back in the day” I was a geocities dweller, hotsprings neighbourhood, class of 97, back when there was a big thing made when we reached 250,000 members. This, I thought, is the future. And it was for a while. Now it’s closing down and I have to pick through badly constructed html and save what I can by next week…

So so so so so so so so so.

Apologies, I’ve not been writing here, have I? Not much. Not often.

My ankle got knackered at Mildew’s wedding – I stepped into the gloom behind a statue of queen Victoria thinking the ground was flat when in fact there was a 3 step drop. My ankle is getting better but it is still not fit enough for me to use it for something important.
I swam – did I say this already – in October Dorset waters…

I swam again in
October Dorset Waters
From Man of War Bay

And off Portland Bill
Handstands on Purbeck Limestone
Down from Golden Cap

…last weekend was the best man speech nerves and remaining calm and collected before the service so that Fox remained calm(ish) and collected(ish), remembering the rings, handing out orders of service, smiling, shaking hands and trying to fix names to faces to positions on family trees. Rewriting my speech on teh fly and watching in wonder at Fox’s great speech in English and Norweigan and then some harmonica blowing to the Ramones ‘Baby I Love You’… Drinking a bit too much a bit too early, forgetting to keep checking the camera and top it up with polaroid paper (but it was all good), dancing with everyone I could, being the last to leave and being refused entry into the Big Chill bar (quite rightly so) heading back to drink Bourbon and Coke with Nicole and Karen, waking up without a hangover the next day, waking up still drunk, sleeping more, waking up with a hangover, shooting across town to try and look stable and eat food with families of the bride and groom, return suits to angry suit hire man – “they’re in the wrong fucking bags” – back to relax…

…work was busy busy busy this week, lots of things going wrong but all fixed by close of play Friday and off to the pub at work in the palace for much needed drinks. Boss celebrating a 40th birthday and was happily drunk when I left at 8. Met lots of people I worked with years ago all saying “Hi, haven’t seen you for ages, I am drunk” “me too, me too”…

Victorian Outfit Looking Good + Alcohol

Got my outfit sorted out for the wedding at the weekend the theme of which is Victorian/Zombie/1950s/Monkeys.
I am rocking a pretty decent Victorian look if I say so myself.

Weekend just gone spent sloe picking in the forest in preparation for Gin. Found a pitched tent hidden in the woods, behind a load of sloe bushes. Someone been living there for a while I wonder or just a weekend camper wanting a lot of privacy?
Saw and nearly stood on an adder as well, it soon buggered off soon as I said to the rest ‘oo look, adder’ – Dad was pullin back th gorse an tryin to get a better look but it was well hidden.
After picking was done we went up Rhinefield and over to the stream where we BBQ’d and dammed the stream – of course we un-dammed it soon after. Lovely warm and eventually sunny day.

Mum has been making blackberry whiskey which is ace! Really tasty and it’s only been in the jar for 4 weeks. Easy to make although still need to figure out how much (if any) sugar to use. The bloke who told us to make some recommended no sugar but I think it needs a bit in there.

Oh – Deej got me another birthday present – Yo La Tengo – And then nothing turned itself inside out – on vinyl – my old copy was half inched years back and it’s bloody hard to track other copies down unless you have £££’s. Good work Deej!
